New Release Announcement: Poison the Well

Poison the Well

by Gordon Bonnet

Snowe Agency is a most unusual group of private detectives.

There’s the brisk, efficient Bethany Hale — who has precognitive, but often highly symbolic, dreams. There’s the stammering, shy telekinetic, Jeff Kolnikoff. There’s Troy Seligman, who would really rather just be home with his family than solving crimes, but is blessed (or cursed) with an ability to perform astral projection. There’s the odd, reclusive Callista Lee, whose skills as a telepath are off the charts. Then there’s the latest hire — handsome, swaggering Seth Augustine, who is a brilliant psychometer, but would just as soon use his unusual talent to find a beautiful woman to spend the night with. And this mismatched band is led by the elegant, enigmatic, silver-haired Mr. Parsifal Snowe, who somehow gets them all to work like a well-oiled machine.

And this time, they’d better. Because they’re working on a new case… trying to find the murderer of a man whose champagne was poisoned at a wedding reception. The problem is… he has no identification, and everyone at the wedding claims that they have no idea who he was. Someone obviously did… and that someone had a motive for murder.

5 star Review

By Thea Atkinson, author

Format:Kindle Edition
I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up poison the well by Gordon Bonnet. Typically, I follow his blog and read his work because he has a unique way of writing about speculative fiction and of actually writing speculative fiction that I enjoy.

I was not prepared for a paranormal murder mystery, which is what this novel is. I had expected Mr. Bonnett’s new novel to be another interesting spin on something in the realm of the paranormal, and it didn’t disappoint – it just wasn’t quite at the forefront as it is in most of Mr. Bonnett’s published work. It nestled quite nicely into the main crux of the plot without being too overwhelming. While I wasn’t prepared for a murder mystery, I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the story, and read almost all of it in one sitting.

As I read, I was constantly reminded of an Agatha Christie movie: kind of an old-fashioned whodunit kind of affair. The plot moves along at a good pace, and every time I believed I figured out who the murderer was, the author through another curve that put me straight back to the thinking drawing board.

As in all of Mr. Bonnett’s work that I’ve read, his dialogue is absolutely stunning. He managed to make each character – and there were a lot of them – sound different, and sound realistic at the same time.

I also got the sense of an Avengers type story: a collection of characters that I think Mr. Bonnett will continue with in a series. I came to appreciate each one of them, and especially the sideline character of Jeff, who we suspect from the beginning has an interesting talent, but we are never quite shown what it is until the moment when it becomes the most useful. The author sets this up quite well throughout the novel so that we know it is coming, and we anticipate it, wait for it, appreciate it when it does occur. Very well done, Mr. Bonnett.

I remain wondering what Mr. Snowe’s talent is – and I imagine the author has left that a secret on purpose — to lend him mystique.

The writing is clean, and the grammar is clean. This was a fun read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys murder mysteries. See if you can figure out who it is.

Now, enough about the story, let me tell you about Gordon.

I met Gordon working on The With Love Project. This project is a charity program that The Writing Network and Osier Publishing have pulled together to support Doctors without Borders. Gordon submitted his work for review and inclusion to the project.

As part of that project, Sarah Barnard of Osier Publishing and I read every entry. Gordon’s got to me, big time. Everything I’ve read of his since, lingers in my mind. Since then we’ve connected and learned a great deal about each other. He is an inspiration and the guide of young minds as a teacher. He has a good heart and supports other writers. He’s native to Louisiana, but living in upstate New York. He is, without question, exceptionally talented.

This multi-published author creates worlds that you have to experience from the first taste. His creations dive into the psyche in a way few others can achieve. I would comfortably liken him to an Edgar Allen Poe style and ability.

If you have not read his work before this is a fantastic opportunity to pick up his book.

Don’t miss out on Poison the Well

New Release Announcement: Ash of Ambition

Today we have the privilege of helping launch the first book in a new and exciting series from author YK Greene. The title of the book is Ash of Ambition. It is an incredible developing series with fiery intensity! Here’s the description of the book launching today:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0070ORXS6

Rin Tyler is the well off, reclusive oldest daughter of the Tyler family; Ash is a temperamental Cleaner with an unusual penchant for the cleansing effects of fire. When these sides of the same woman collide it can only end in flames…

I had the opportunity to interview YK Greene about the book and I’ve included it below for all of you to enjoy.

What inspired this book?  Part of the inspiration comes from my love of “La Femme Nikita,” and the mufti-purpose interrogators, how unlike the rest of Section they always seemed to enjoy their work. And part of my inspiration comes from classic fiction like, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” “Rappaccinii’s Daughter” and even the “Great God Pan.”

Is it related to any of your previous creations? If so, how?  Sadly, I actually lost the second book in my other series – which inspired me to push forward with “Ash of Ambitions,” the first book in a whole new series from me.

How long did it take to create this masterpiece? “Ash of Ambitions” actually started out as a NaNoWriMo submission. I did have a lot of work left to do after the month was over though!

What’s your favorite part of the book?  Oh that’s hard! Well I think it would have to be the scene where Ash and Caliban really battle it out and the first time those two characters meet are my favorite.

If you could say one thing to your readers, what would it be? I’m so sorry I lost the next book in the Four Horsemen series, hopefully you’ll enjoy a breather with Rin/Ash while I get up the nerve to do it all again!

With Love Project Continues: New Release soon

The With Love Project is a charity anthology series, published by Ethics Trading in cooperation with The Writing Network. The Anthology series was inspired by the events of March 11, 2011 in Japan.

The earthquake and subsequent Tsunami took more lives than easily accounted for. It affected millions more around the world.

On March 25th we released the first anthology and selected the proceeds to go to Doctors without Borders – This charity operates in many countries around the world regularly and offers aide for emergency situations such as the disaster relief work that was needed in Haiti after the earthquake there or in Japan once it was safe to set up operations.

We have the next anthology installment coming out on Oct 31st. It is our 3rd and it still benefits the charity. The first anthology contained 17 short stories, however each of the subsequent books in the series contain 8. We found the first run to be both rushed and difficult to manage so many additional stories. To limit and give complete credit where credit is properly due, we’ve opted for a more manageable 8 stories and thus far it’s been very difficult to limit to that number.

One way to learn how you can get involved would be to like the facebook page. Another would be to follow @EthicsTrading @UKSarahBarnard and @TheLadyWrites on twitter. A third would be to follow the hashtag #WithLoveProject on twitter and  G+.

For every one of these anthologies, there have been an incredible and impressive array of short stories contributed. The next book, titled After Dark, has both unique art and fantastic stories. I’ll be talking more about each author on this blog, on twitter, on facebook and G+ as we get closer.

New Release Announcement: Special Education Needs

Author Tania Tirraoro has created a non-fiction book, near to my heart. My son is a special needs kiddo and when we start our adventure as parents of special needs, we are often weeding through a sea of information without much direction. The process is trial and error all the time and it’s often a struggle to face it. The assistance programs don’t always make it easy for us either. Tania has taken the time to pull together her knowledge into a fabulous book that will help parents wander through the process.

From Tania:

When you’re publishing any book, it is a nerve-wracking process. Will it be well-received? Will anyone notice it? Will it sell well? are all questions you ask yourself.

When you have written a non-fiction book, aimed at helping people, the worry is double. Have I got all my facts right? Is there enough information to be truly useful? Will anyone be interested? are all questions to add to the usual worries.

My new book, published first in eformat, to be followed a paperback in a few weeks is aimed at helping parents, specifically parents in the UK, with getting the right SEN help for their children. Even though the system is the UK one, if you have to compile a case arguing for your special needs child’s requirements, it contains useful advice wherever you are based.

The book has been developed from my website, http://www.specialneedsjungle.co.uk  , which I started in 2008 after I successfully negotiated a legally-binding ‘statement’ of special educational needs for my younger son. This means that the local education authority is compelled to ensure that my son receives the level of care described within the statement.

Of course, to make sure that the correct provision is prescribed, you have to make sure that all your child’s special needs have been assessed and understood. This is a huge job for a parents and many hand the job over to expensive SEN lawyers from the start.

We couldn’t afford to do that and, with my background as a journalist, I was fairly confident I could manage most of the process myself. It involved making sure I had gathered together all my son’s IEPs, reports, doctors’ letters and assessments and then writing a long document including references to all the material I had gathered together.

I realised that there must be many parents out there who needed help with the process and so the website was born. It even came in handy for me when I was going through the same process with my older son.

Then one morning, I sat up in bed and knew I had to write a book with more details for parents than what was on the blog and within a month, it was complete. It takes you through the whole process and has input from expert SEN Advocate, Julie Maynard who describes the lows and lower stills of going to an SEN Tribunal when the local authority won’t give your child what you know they need.

I’m very proud of this book and hope it will help many parents get started with the process. You can find it on Amazon.co.ukAmazon.com  & Smashwords.com
